We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist for our young research team at the Allergy Research Group, University Medical Center Freiburg, Germany

Topic: Immune regulation and tolerance induction in allergic diseases

We are a young group of 2 senior scientists, 2 post doc, 5 doctoral students and 4 technicians working toward a common goal in identifying and characterizing mechanisms that control the allergic immune response. The goal of our studies is to develop novel strategies for primary prevention and identify novel targets for a better therapy of allergic diseases. The studies will be conducted in vitro as well as in vivo using established murine animal models of allergic diseases.

The candidate should be a team player and have a strong background in immunology and/or cell biology. Experience in flow cytometry, protein chemistry and routine molecular biology is mandatory. Moreover, the candidate should be fascinated by cells and their behaviour in culture as well as interested in in-vivo studies conducted in murine animal models. Experience in supervising technicians, medical doctoral and PhD students is desirable.

The applicant will be responsible for the continued development of our microscope facility. The successful applicant, with necessary qualifications, can also be involved with or manage part of our recently funded European Community FP7 research project on optical analysis of protein aggregates in neurodegenerative diseases. We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented individual to work closely together with biologists on different types of microscopes (2photon-, fluorescence-, laser scanning-microscopes). Competence in optical techniques are necessary for this position. Postdoctoral Position: Mathematical Modelling of Photorespiration

A postdoctoral position is available in the Systems Biology Research Group at the University of Rostock, Germany (Olaf Wolkenhauer, www.sbi.uni-rostock.de).

Photorespiration represents one of the major elements in plant primary metabolism, constituting the second-most important process in the land-based biosphere. In light of the importance of this process a DFG funded research network (“Forschergruppe”) PROMICS is to take a systems biology approach to understand the dynamics of photorespiration. The DFG research unit involves three groups from the University of Rostock and six other experimental groups from across Germany.

Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical and computational modelling and motivation to carry out an interdisciplinary project with experimental groups. Individuals with backgrounds in metabolic network reconstruction or metabolic engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills are required for the candidate to lead the modeling activity within PROMICS. The project is funded for an initial period of three years, with a possible extension for three more years. The Division of Cellular Allergology focuses on the identification and molecular characterization of immunmodulatory molecules from parasitic worms and the investigation of their potential use for the therapy and prophylaxis of allergies and autoimmune diseases.

The project„In vitro culture of Schistosoma mansoni – culture dish instead of mammalian host” aims at establishing the complete mammalian part of the life cycle of schistosomes in
vitro. The current culture protocol in this lab allows propagating schistosomula in vitro
up to the adult stage including pairing and deposition of immature eggs. Now, it is
intended to further optimize the culture conditions to obtain fully mature eggs and
release of infective miracidia. In parallel, the technique of cryopreservation of live schistosomes will be optimized along with establishment of a schistosome bank. This will
allow the need-based access to infectious stages of the parasite and render continuous
maintenance of the parasite life cycle in laboratory animals unnecessary. In vitro culture
provides a highly effective tool for parasitological and immunological studies that for
example allows potential anti-schistosomal drugs to be tested by high-throughput procedures.

The project will both save animal lives and improve the cost efficiency ratio for
schistosome research.

Applicants should have a strong background in parasitology, immunology and/or biochemistry.

Experiences and technical skill in the maintenance of parasites and in vitro
culture systems are prerequisites. Candidates should be team workers with a high
degree of commitment and creativity. They should have a good command of English
and should be able to present scientific data in a transparent and competent manner.
Computer knowledge will be an advantage.

The and the invites applications for The MD/PhD program is a common initiation of the Medical Faculty and the Faculty for Biology. It has been designed to create a platform for
scientific careers for medical graduates and to provide a scientific promotion of the young academic generation in the field of biomedicine and clinical research.

The goal of the program is to obtain the degree of „Dr. rer. nat.” (PhD) according to the gradulation rules of the GSLS. The subject of the thesis and the institution in which the doctor thesis will be carried out are freely eligible by the doctor students. The programm integrates an individual training program. The amount of time it takes to receive a doctorate lasts about three to four years.

We are looking for highly motivated medical graduates who want to embark on a career in translational and clinical research. Admission to the program is based on competitive selection procedure. Applicants require a degree in Medicine (MD thesis and “Drittes Staatsexamen”; for German applicants: experimentalMDthesis is required) or equal degrees

Open PhD position on electric interactions between implants and bio-systems. The Graduate School (Graduiertenkolleg) “Analysis and simulation of electric intera ctions between implants and biosystems (Welisa)” is an interdisciplinary consortium of the Faculties of Medicine, Natural Sciences as well as Computer. The school is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). We seek to fill an open PhD student position in a project on the experimental investigation of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in an animal model of Parkinson’s disease. The processes in the vicinity of DBS electrodes should be investigated by electrochemical, cellular, molecular and numerical field calculation methods. Tissue alterations should be analysed by immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and behavioural studies on animals in order to correlate the observed effects with stimulation parameters (signal amplitude, shape and duration). The investigations
aim at the optimisation of stimulation parameters and the assessment of new electrode surfaces and target regions of stimulation.

A longside with their PhD research, scholars will attend relevant courses and carry
out joint research in the framework of interdisciplinary seminars. We are seeking
for highly motivated candidates interested in interdisciplinary work. The preferred
candidate should have a biophysical background and hold a master/diploma
degree in natural sciences (biology, physics or chemistry).

The stipend amounts to € 1,340 per month for three years; research and travel
funds will be provided in addition. Especially women are encouraged to apply.

The Position
You will direct a laboratory focused on the in vitro and in vivo pharmacological characterization of novel radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET). The project deals with the emergence of regulatory T cells and analysis of the molecular mechanisms of their generation. It is supported by the DFG via the Graduiertenkolleg 1202 (oligonucleotides) at the Klinikum der LMU encouraged. The Arthritis Unit has a 2007 new set of molecular biological research laboratory with spacious work areas and a complete infrastructure for all the work and methods of modern molecular biology laboratories working. The scientific projects of the unit will include Rheumatism by the DFG (Schu 786/8-1 individual applications, Schu 786/2-5, SK59/4-1; Graduiertenkolleg 1202, SFB 571 Mechanisms of auto-immunity) and the industry. He/she will work on the assessment and introduction of a new model system supplementing the in vitro toxicology test battery for the assessment of drug development candidates. The candidate will concentrate on experiments which include monitoring liver-specific functions to assess the relevancy of the 3D systems. A second task will be the evaluation of these new systems for toxicology experiments in comparison to established models (monolayer cell culture & in vivo experiments) by use of the most indicative and predictive end points. The candidate will work in a laboratory dedicated to molecular and biochemical toxicology testing. Opening for a Postdoctoral Scientist
Within the ERA NanoSci+ project on Nanocommunication: How viral particles convince cells to let them inside in collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam), Oxford University and the Israel Technion Institute of Technology (Haifa) we are looking for a highly motivated scientist willing to work in a high-profile international, interactive team.
Your major task will be to analyse the interaction of HSV capsids with the nuclear pore, to identify the host nuclear import and pore factors interacting with HSV, and to understand viral genome release and import into the nucleus on a molecular level. The preferred candidate has a PhD degree and a strong scientific background in biochemistry, cell biology or virology. Hands-on experience studying the nuclear pore complex, RNAi, subcellular fractionation, fluorescence microscopy, and expression of recombinant proteins would be an asset.

Within a national program project grant (German Research Council DFG-SPP 1175) on Dynamics of Cellular Membranes and their exploitation by viruses we are looking for a highly motivated assistant running the molecular biology branch of our group. You will be actively involved in our research project studying the function of HSV proteins in virus assembly. Your main responsibilities will be the generation and characterization of new HSV mutants using our bacterial artificial chromosome. You should be familiar with molecular biology techniques, such as cloning,

The aim is to characterize, primarily by non-invasive methods, the time course and
interrelation of functional and morphological changes during the process of atherosclerosis.
Imaging modalities are high resolution 1H MRT, 19F imaging and high-end
MR techniques quantifying elasticity of the vessel wall. Contrast agents for
molecular and cellular imaging are developed in cooperation with the Institute of
Inorganic Chemistry.

Cell Biologist to study optimization of delivery for RNAi therapeutics

to work in the High-Throughput Technology Development Studio (HT-TDS)
of the MPI-CBG in Dresden. The HT-TDS is developing phenotypic assays
and implementing automated high-content screens in cultured cells and
model organisms with the aid of robotic systems, automated microscopy
and advanced automated image analysis to discover novel gene functions
by RNA interference and screen small molecule collections (see

The selected candidate would be responsible for the development and
implementation of in vitro quantitative cell-based assays to optimize
RNAi formulation for therapeutic use.

The position is offered within the scope of a collaboration with a leading

methods for siRNA delivery.

The preferred candidate has a PhD degree and a strong scientific background
in a relevant field of cell biology. Experience in advanced fluorescence

The International Leibniz Graduate School Systems Biology Lab on a Chip

(S–BLOC) is a cooperation between the Institute for Analytical
Sciences (ISAS), the department of Systemic Cell Biology of the Max
Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology and the departments of
Chemical Biotechnology and Micro Structure Technology at the
Technische Universität Dortmund. This interdisciplinary environment
gives ideal prospects to develop novel cell analysis methods and procedures
for systems biology based on lab on a chip technology as well
as the possibility to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the various
scientific and technological fields.

The program is open to qualified young science and engineering graduates
with excellent student records. They must hold a Masters, Diploma or
equivalent degree in science or engineering that allows direct admission
for doctoral studies in Germany. The degree should include an
experimental research experience of at least four months.

of the Centre of Chronic Immunodeficiencies at the University of Freiburg,

Candidates for the post of Technical Assistant ideally should have previous
experience in cell and molecular biology and animal work, but this is not an
absolute requirement. Salaries will be based on previous experience according
to TVöD guidelines.

in the immune system both in mouse models and in humans (for further

The PhD students will work on the role of epithelial cells in the induction
of T cell tolerance in the intestine, especially the pathways leading to the

degree or equivalent; experience in molecular or cell immunology and in
vivo models would be an advantage.

Lab Manager for a new medical research center in Vienna, CeMM

The Research Center for Molecular Medicine is an international, independent and interdisciplinary research institution of the Austrian Academy of Sciences located at the Campus of the Vienna General Hospital and Medical University of Vienna (MUV). "From the clinic to the clinic": Driven by medical needs and through a molecular appreciation of diseases, CeMM integrates basic research and clinical expertise to pursue innovative diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic approaches.
Our new building is currently under construction and will be occupied in early 2010. The institute consists of eight floors (3.409 m" usable area), and provides room for around 100 researchers.

We are looking for a highly motivated b>LAB MANAGER (code: Lab 09) /b> to prepare the relocation of our multidisciplinary groups and to oversee day-to-day operations in the new research facility.

The lab manager will be a key member of CeMM, reports to the Administrative Director and has to work closely with our scientific and administrative members. The position requires interpersonal and communication skills and hands-on experience, combined with the ability to adapt easily to the changing needs and priorities of a fast-past research environment.

Specific duties include
- ordering supplies and equipment
- maintenance of laboratory supplies, inventories, equipment
- recommendations and price negotiations for purchase of supplies and capital equipment
- interacting as needed with IT and Financial Department
- implementation and administration of standard operating procedure (SOP)
- responsibilities as safety representative
- responsible for the management of cleaning and warehouse staff
- organization of relocation of our laboratories
- interacting with facility management of the Medical University Vienna

Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in chemistry, biology or related field; at least three years' professional experience facilitating the logistical operations of an academic or biotech laboratory; familiarity with biochemical analysis and instrumentation (e.g. HPLC, mass spectrometry); good technical, computer, negotiation and communication skills; fluent in English;

transitions in macromolecular interactions” (www.biochemtech.

The aim of the interdisciplinary GRK is to study the causes and effects
of protein folding transitions on biological macromolecular complex formation
in a collaborative environment, using a wide variety of biophysical,
biochemical and cell biological approaches. HALOmem
focuses on the structure and dynamics of integral membrane proteins
and their membranes.
Successful candidates should be highly motivated, of above average
ability and good team workers. They should hold a degree in Biochemistry,
Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy or Physics, and have a keen
interest in acquiring the broad range of available techniques necessary
to tackle the experimental problems and questions involved.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research IZKF “BIOMAT.“ at the RWTH Aachen University invites applications for the Positions:

Research Scientist and PhD Students

Research Scientist. The candidate must have a PhD in molecular biology or a related field with significant experience of standard molecular biology (DNA construct preparation and manipulation), protein characterization (SDS-PAGE, Western), and cell transfection. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask and to track concurrent projects are essential.

The candidate is expected to work and plan experiments independently and be a self-starter. The laboratory interests are the development of IPE and/or RPE cell prosthesis for transplantation subretinally as well as the development of other cellular prosthesis for transplant at disease sites.

The candidate will work under the direction of the Research Group Leader and will play a direct role in establishing systems to produce, characterize and genetically modify cellular prosthesis. The position is available starting March 2009.

PhD Student. The IZKF "BIOMAT." seeks qualified, highly motivated PhD students with a master/diploma degree in biology, biochemistry or related life sciences. The positions are available starting March 2009 in the IZKFfunded group of Prof. Dr. Thumann focusing on the establishment and characterization of cellular prosthesis for transplantation in the eye. The candidate should be familiar with cell biology assays including ELISA, fluorescence activated cell sorter and tissue culture. The candidate must have good communication skills and should be able to work constructively in a multi-disciplinary team.

invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position which is for an initial four-year appointment with the possibility of extension.

The position is available from the 1st of June in the Department of Molecular Immunology (Contact persons: Prof. Dr. Michael Reth and PD Dr. Wolfgang Schamel).

The project aims to understand the molecular mechanisms and dynamics of lymphocyte activation. One focus will be the interactions of the antigen receptors with the intracellular signalling machinery. Applicants should have experience in at least one of the following fields: biochemistry, molecular biology, protein purification and proteomics techniques, flow cytometry,
signal transduction pathways, T- and B-cell activation. Payment and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TVöD (salary agreement for public service employees) or a postdoctoral fellowship of the Max-Planck Society. In the project Drosophila melanogaster is employed as a model system for lipometabolism research aiming at the identification of evolutionarily conserved genes and mechanisms relevant to human lipid storage diseases and obesity.

The successful candidate will apply a broad range of genetic, biochemical, molecular and cell biological methods to functionally characterize candidate genes putatively involved in body fat storage control in the fly. Lipid biochemistry and/or physiology skills or practical experience with Drosophila are advantageous but not strictly required. Students with high motivation for basic research and the ability to work independently but team-oriented are encouraged to apply.

The position is initially available for two years with a likely extension to three years. Students will be awarded a Max Planck Scholarship.

The subject of the candidate's work will be mass-spectrometric based investigation of crosslinked protein-protein and protein-RNA complexes covering the entire range of "state-of-the-art" protein analytical techniques.
The successful candidate should have a strong background in protein biochemistry and protein-analytical techniques, especially protein purification and separation. Basic knowledge of the two mass-spectrometric techniques MALDI und ESI is also desirable, but will not be a prerequisite.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Description:
The repair of cutaneous wounds is a complex, highly orchestrated
multi-cellular process ensuring the rapid restoration of the
integrity of an organism. To study signal transduction pathways
and genetic programs in wound healing we have employed 2D
and 3D organotypic co-culture systems containing cells from
genetically modified mice to identify an essential role of
transcription factor AP-1 (Fos/Jun), as well as AP-1-regulated
cytokines in cell-cell communication during wound healing
(Szabowski et al., 2000 Cell, 103, 745; Florin et al., 2005, J Cell
Sci 118,1981). Recently, a systems biology approach was
employed to unravel the network topology and simulate the
spatio-temporal regulatory network of gene expression controlling
epidermal cell migration during wound healing (Busch et al.,
2008, Mol Syst Biol 4, 199). To follow up on these findings we will
study cell-cell communication and gene programs implicated in
cell proliferation, migration and differentiation in order to define
genetic networks underlying wound healing pathology. The
project is embedded within the BMBF Initiative “Systems Biology
in Medicine, MedSys” focussing on the topic “Chronic Wounds”.
Thus, the successful candidate is also expected to coordinate/
participate in collaborative research activities with other groups
of the consortium.

for the Department of Vaccinology and Applied Microbiology to establish a
program to elucidate the mechanisms of action of mucosal adjuvants spinning
