Scientist/Application Engineer/Physicist

The applicant will be responsible for the continued development of our microscope facility. The successful applicant, with necessary qualifications, can also be involved with or manage part of our recently funded European Community FP7 research project on optical analysis of protein aggregates in neurodegenerative diseases. We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented individual to work closely together with biologists on different types of microscopes (2photon-, fluorescence-, laser scanning-microscopes). Thus, the applicant is expected to have experience in techniques using light and fluorescent microscopy, image analysis and will need to have or develop an excellent understanding of 2photon-microscopy. Competence in optical techniques are necessary for this position. Computer skills are essential & preference will be given to applicants with a background in optics, microscopy, image analysis, and/or (neuro-)biology.

The position is initially for two years but can be extended into a permanent staff fellow position. Post-doctoral Scientist in Mechanistic toxicology group, Roche

Who we are
At Roche, 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. Working together, we’ve become one of the world’s leading research-focused healthcare groups. Our success is built on innovation, curiosity and diversity, and on seeing each other’s differences as an advantage. To innovate healthcare, Roche has ambitious plans to keep learning and growing – and is seeking people who have the same goals for themselves. The headquarters in Basel is one of Roche’s largest sites. It is home to the Corporate Executive Committee, the Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics Divisions and the global business functions. Roche Basel also covers the entire business chain from research, development and production through to marketing. Over 8,000 people from more than 60 countries work at the site.

The Position
The successful candidate will support enhancing the technical repertoire of the mechanistic toxicology group by evaluation and further development of 3D-Liver Systems. He/she will work on the assessment and introduction of a new model system supplementing the in vitro toxicology test battery for the assessment of drug development candidates. The candidate will concentrate on experiments which include monitoring liver-specific functions to assess the relevancy of the 3D systems. A second task will be the evaluation of these new systems for toxicology experiments in comparison to established models (monolayer cell culture & in vivo experiments) by use of the most indicative and predictive end points. The candidate will work in a laboratory dedicated to molecular and biochemical toxicology testing. He/she will closely interact with affiliated non-clinical development functions (Toxicology, Drug Metabolism, Metabolic Diseases) as well as with the external partner providing the 3D systems.

Who you are
You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies, and where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.

Requirements include PhD/MD/MD-PhD with a focus on hepatology, liver physiology or related fields. Ideal candidates have experience in drug -induced liver toxicity in vivo with a demonstrated ability to perform in vitro assays using primary cultures. Knowledge of standard molecular and biochemical tools to be applied to cellular assays are expected.
Good oral and written communication capabilities in English are essential. Strong interpersonal skills, skills in collaborative problem solving and team interactions are required.
