Wurzburg The Rudolf-Virchow-Center serves the exploration of key proteins that a central importance for understanding the origins, diagnosis and Treatment of disease. For a biochemical / structural biological community project we are looking for Doktoran.

The aim of the project is the analysis of protein-protein interactions and the structural characterization of the cytoskeleton-regulatory phosphatase Chronophin (Gohla et al., Nature Cell Biology, 2005) in the complex with new identified regulatory subunits.

The involvement in the Excellence Initiative of the DFG-funded graduate School of Life Sciences PhD students is the opportunity in specific courses both practical and theoretical knowledge of the laboratory work, to obtain. The body is temporary. Salary is according to TV-L. Severely Candidates will all things being essentially equal suitability preferred set.

Post-doctoral Scientist in Mechanistic toxicology group, Roche

The Position
The successful candidate will support enhancing the technical repertoire of the mechanistic toxicology group by evaluation and further development of 3D-Liver Systems. He/she will work on the assessment and introduction of a new model system supplementing the in vitro toxicology test battery for the assessment of drug development candidates. The candidate will concentrate on experiments which include monitoring liver-specific functions to assess the relevancy of the 3D systems. A second task will be the evaluation of these new systems for toxicology experiments in comparison to established models (monolayer cell culture & in vivo experiments) by use of the most indicative and predictive end points. The candidate will work in a laboratory dedicated to molecular and biochemical toxicology testing. He/she will closely interact with affiliated non-clinical development functions (Toxicology, Drug Metabolism, Metabolic Diseases) as well as with the external partner providing the 3D systems.

Requirements include PhD/MD/MD-PhD with a focus on hepatology, liver physiology or related fields. Knowledge of standard molecular and biochemical tools to be applied to cellular assays are expected.
Good oral and written communication capabilities in English are essential. Strong interpersonal skills, skills in collaborative problem solving and team interactions are required.

The Department of Dermatology and Allergic Diseases at the University Hospital of Ulm invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position (TV-L, E 13) available in the field of immunology and immunogenetics in psoriasis and inflammatory skin diseases in the laboratory of Karin Scharffetter-Kochanek.

Ulm is located in the southern part of Germany, close to the Alps.
In a highly innovative, dynamic and supporting environment, this position allows individuals interested in polygenic inflammatory skin diseases and immunology to become integrally involved in the investigation of mechanisms underlying polygenic inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases, especially including the final Identification of disease modifying genes and how they change the susceptibility and manifestation of psoriasis in
the CD18 hypomorphic mouse model (J Clin Invest 118: 2629, 2008, J Clin Invest 116: 2105, 2006, J Clin Invest 116: 2094, 2006, J Immunol 177: 4612, 2006, J Immunol 171: 5697, 2003).

The laboratory will provide excellent scientific education in a scientifically stimulating environment. We are interested in recruiting self-motivated individuals with a desire to succeed and complement the internationally competitive research activities of the laboratory. Research will include molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, flow cytometry and novel in vivo imaging technologies in close collaboration with other members of the
faculty or external collaboration partners.

Requirements: A strong background in immunology, cell biology, molecular biology or genetics is preferred, but not required. An appreciation for working with small animals is required.

PhD position in Tissue Engineering strategies at the Orthopaedic Center for Musculoskeletal Research (König-Ludwig-Haus) Würzburg

With funding of the DFG Type II collagen-based nanofiber scaffolds for cartilage regeneration a PhD position for a life scientist with strong interest and background in Tissue Engineering strategies is available at the Orthopaedic Center for Musculoskeletal Research (König-Ludwig-Haus) Würzburg. The scientific aim is to investigate cell-matrix interactions of primary cells (MSCs/chondrocytes) on nanofibrous collagen scaffolds in the context of cartilage repair strategies.

Techniques from electrospinning, molecular biology and SEM to bioreactor cell culture will be applied to highlight the regulative key events during chondrogenic differentiation of primary cells in regards to scaffold morphology and biochemistry. Salary is based on TV-L. The position is available from July 1st, 2009 on.
