Postdoctoral Position: Mathematical Modelling of Photorespiration

A postdoctoral position is available in the Systems Biology Research Group at the University of Rostock, Germany (Olaf Wolkenhauer, www.sbi.uni-rostock.de).

Photorespiration represents one of the major elements in plant primary metabolism, constituting the second-most important process in the land-based biosphere. In light of the importance of this process a DFG funded research network (“Forschergruppe”) PROMICS is to take a systems biology approach to understand the dynamics of photorespiration. The DFG research unit involves three groups from the University of Rostock and six other experimental groups from across Germany.

Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical and computational modelling and motivation to carry out an interdisciplinary project with experimental groups. Individuals with backgrounds in metabolic network reconstruction or metabolic engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills are required for the candidate to lead the modeling activity within PROMICS. The project is funded for an initial period of three years, with a possible extension for three more years. The salary is according to the German University payment scheme (E14) for an experienced postdoc (equivalent to a research group leader). The Wolkenhauer Group (www.sbi.uni-rostock.de) provides a vibrant research environment, with a number of active research projects in the areas of bioinformatics and systems biology. The group moved in July 2009 into a new building and
provides excellent facilities.

Experienced Electrophysiologist (Postdoc) - Arrhythmia

For a EU-funded project on cellular and molecular mechanisms of arrhythmia, we seek a skilful electrophysiologist, immediately, for up to 5 years. Experience in patch clamp and TEVC, ideally in the animal model Caenorhabditis elegans (body wall and pharynx muscle), is highly welcome. Optogenetic methods, utilizing Channelrhodopsin and Halorhodopsin, and candidate mutations will be used to trigger and study arrhythmia. A PhD in physiology, biology or biochemistry is needed. The Department of Dermatology and Allergic Diseases at the University Hospital of Ulm invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position (TV-L, E 13) available in the field of immunology and immunogenetics in psoriasis and inflammatory skin diseases in the laboratory of Karin Scharffetter-Kochanek.

Ulm is located in the southern part of Germany, close to the Alps.
In a highly innovative, dynamic and supporting environment, this position allows individuals interested in polygenic inflammatory skin diseases and immunology to become integrally involved in the investigation of mechanisms underlying polygenic inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases, especially including the final Identification of disease modifying genes and how they change the susceptibility and manifestation of psoriasis in
the CD18 hypomorphic mouse model (J Clin Invest 118: 2629, 2008, J Clin Invest 116: 2105, 2006, J Clin Invest 116: 2094, 2006, J Immunol 177: 4612, 2006, J Immunol 171: 5697, 2003).

The laboratory will provide excellent scientific education in a scientifically stimulating environment. We are interested in recruiting self-motivated individuals with a desire to succeed and complement the internationally competitive research activities of the laboratory. Research will include molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, flow cytometry and novel in vivo imaging technologies in close collaboration with other members of the
faculty or external collaboration partners.

Requirements: A strong background in immunology, cell biology, molecular biology or genetics is preferred, but not required. An appreciation for working with small animals is required.
