PhD Student Position in C. elegans Molecular Biology

For a European Union funded project on cellular and molecular mechanisms of arrhythmia, we seek a highly motivated student for a PhD project, starting immediately, for up to 4 years. Using advanced methods for gene targeting and transgene construction, candidate mutations inducing muscle arrhythmia will be introduced in the animal model Caenorhabditis elegans. Furthermore, optogenetic methods (Channelrhodopsin and Halorhodopsin) will be used. A university degree (Diploma, Master) in molecular biology, biology, biochemistry, or physiology is required. Solid experience in molecular biology methods is a prerequisite, previous experience with C. elegans, as well as with “recombineering” methods, is highly welcome. The MD/PhD program is a common initiation of the Medical Faculty and the Faculty for Biology.

The and the invites applications for The MD/PhD program is a common initiation of the Medical Faculty and the Faculty for Biology. It has been designed to create a platform for
scientific careers for medical graduates and to provide a scientific promotion of the young academic generation in the field of biomedicine and clinical research.

The goal of the program is to obtain the degree of „Dr. rer. nat.” (PhD) according to the gradulation rules of the GSLS. The subject of the thesis and the institution in which the doctor thesis will be carried out are freely eligible by the doctor students. The programm integrates an individual training program. The amount of time it takes to receive a doctorate lasts about three to four years.

We are looking for highly motivated medical graduates who want to embark on a career in translational and clinical research. Admission to the program is based on competitive selection procedure. Applicants require a degree in Medicine (MD thesis and “Drittes Staatsexamen”; for German applicants: experimentalMDthesis is required) or equal degrees
for graduates from abroad. Applications should include CV, copies of universities certificates, addresses of two potential referees, a short outline of research interests and the application letter. Applications from severely handicapped persons with basically similar qualification will be given priority.
