Postdoctoral Position: Mathematical Modelling of Photorespiration
Photorespiration represents one of the major elements in plant primary metabolism, constituting the second-most important process in the land-based biosphere. In light of the importance of this process a DFG funded research network (“Forschergruppe”) PROMICS is to take a systems biology approach to understand the dynamics of photorespiration. The DFG research unit involves three groups from the University of Rostock and six other experimental groups from across Germany.
Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical and computational modelling and motivation to carry out an interdisciplinary project with experimental groups. Individuals with backgrounds in metabolic network reconstruction or metabolic engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills are required for the candidate to lead the modeling activity within PROMICS. The project is funded for an initial period of three years, with a possible extension for three more years. The salary is according to the German University payment scheme (E14) for an experienced postdoc (equivalent to a research group leader). The Wolkenhauer Group (www.sbi.uni-rostock.de) provides a vibrant research environment, with a number of active research projects in the areas of bioinformatics and systems biology. The group moved in July 2009 into a new building and
provides excellent facilities.
Interested candidates should send their CV and documents in pdf format to:

A Postdoctoral Scientist and a Technical Assistant at Institute of Virology in Hannover Medical School.
extramural scientific institutions is reflected in the fact that the MHH is the German medical university with the largest volume of grant funding. The Institute of Virology hosts 7 research teams funded by the DFG, the EU, Volkswagenstiftung, Wilhelm-Sander-Stiftung and the BMBF and working on important human pathogenic viruses such as the KSHV, HCMV, HSV, HCV, HIV, and adenoviruses.
In the Sodeik team, we study the herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection of epithelial cells and
neurons using digital life-cell imaging and dual-colour fluorescent viral strains, electron microscopy, and biochemical assays reconstituting key aspects of the viral life cycle. Our success in our scientific endeavours’ is built on curiosity, innovation, and diverse approaches to do science. We offer a nice, dynamic team driven by collaborative efforts.
Opening for a Postdoctoral Scientist
Within the ERA NanoSci+ project on Nanocommunication: How viral particles convince cells to let them inside in collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam), Oxford University and the Israel Technion Institute of Technology (Haifa) we are looking for a highly motivated scientist willing to work in a high-profile international, interactive team.
Your major task will be to analyse the interaction of HSV capsids with the nuclear pore, to identify the host nuclear import and pore factors interacting with HSV, and to understand viral genome release and import into the nucleus on a molecular level. The preferred candidate has a PhD degree and a strong scientific background in biochemistry, cell biology or virology. Hands-on experience studying the nuclear pore complex, RNAi, subcellular fractionation, fluorescence microscopy, and expression of recombinant proteins would be an asset.
Opening for a Technical Assistant, part-time
Within a national program project grant (German Research Council DFG-SPP 1175) on Dynamics of Cellular Membranes and their exploitation by viruses we are looking for a highly motivated assistant running the molecular biology branch of our group. You will be actively involved in our research project studying the function of HSV proteins in virus assembly. Your main responsibilities will be the generation and characterization of new HSV mutants using our bacterial artificial chromosome. You should be familiar with molecular biology techniques, such as cloning,
mutagenesis or quantitative RT-PCR, have a quick grasp on learning new techniques, able to work on your own and known for your accurate but yet efficient working style.
Both positions are available for three years starting in July 2009. Please feel free to call us for
further informal inquiries. Applications including a CV and three letters of recommendation should be sent to Beate Sodeik by June 10th, 2009.

We offer a stimulating and truly international environment. Glycart is located in Schlieren/Zurich.
To further strengthen our organization we are looking for a Research Associate in Molecular Biology (temporary for 1 year, starting in August 2009 or earlier)
Who you are:
You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies, and where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.
In this position you will join a multinational team devoted to the design and generation of different kinds of expression systems for use in eukaryotic and prokaryotic hosts. You will be responsible for conducting the day-to-day construction of expression vectors for many different purposes such as antibody and antigen production in transiently transfected cell lines or the preparation of high quality expression vectors for the generation of stable cell lines. Also, you are supporting the team in generation of all necessary constructs to bring new projects ahead in development. An additional task in that position is the optimization of expression systems for use in bacterial high cell density fermentation processes.
For this demanding position in a dynamic environment we are looking for a research associate who holds a Bachelor/Master in biological sciences (or equivalent qualification, no PhD) with recent and extensive research laboratory experience. Industrial experience is preferred. Fluency in English and German is a must. Hands-on experience with standard molecular biology techniques (such as cloning, nucleic acid isolation, PCR and sequence analysis) is required and familiarity with biochemical methods (SDS-PAGE, Western Blot) and fermentation process is advantageous. You have a high degree of self-motivation, flexibility and are able to independently conduct experiments. You are also inquisitive and strive for continuous process improvement. In addition you interact effectively with a truly multinational team of scientists.
